Syphilis has always been considered a shameful disease and had a variety of names. There are several hypotheses on the origin of syphilis caused by Treponema pallidum. Multiple lines of evidence indicate that Treponema pallidum existed in Europe since prehistoric times. By the beginning of the 16th century, syphilis spread throughout Europe and reached Russia. In the end of the 20th century, there was a sharp increase in the incidence of syphilis in Russia. In 1988–1996, we observed a 62-fold increase in the incidence of syphilis in Russia, which was the highest in Europe. Since 1997, the epidemic has declined, and in 2017, the incidence of syphilis reached 18.74 cases per 100,000 population, which is almost 15 times lower than in 1997. However, there is a growing incidence of late-stage syphilis, including neurosyphilis and cardiosyphilis.
