Comparative characteristics of the results of hernioplasty by Lichtenstein using standard and lightweight mesh prosthesis

A monocenter randomized comparative study, based on 96 patients with inguinal hernia, was undertaken. All patients were divided into two groups according to the type of mesh prosthesis that was used in hernioplasty with the Lichtenstein technique: lightweight polyester monofilament mesh Parietex™ and standard monofilament polypropylene mesh Parietene™ (both Covidien, USA). We found out that during early postoperative period the intensity of pain syndrome and local tissue reactions do not fundamentally depend on the type of applied mesh prosthesis. It was concluded that in prosthetic hernioplasty the use of lightweight synthetic materials in stead of standard polypropylene mesh prosthesis leads to a significant reduction of pain intensity and duration, sense of discomfort, minimal limitation of patient activity during a long-term postoperative period. © 2018 GEOTAR Media.
