Endoscopy in early gastric cancer diagnosis: Step by step (surgical perspective)

Gastric cancer is one of the leading causes of oncologic morbidity and mortality both in Russia and worldwide. The primary method for early diagnosis of gastric cancer and upper gastrointestinal tract is endoscopy. Present article discusses the evolution of this method. The authors demonstrate the picture of the method development from first devices introduced in the early 19th century to the period of the endoscopic technology flourishing in the late 20th century resulting in the increasing rate of early gastric cancer detection. They pay a special attention to the innovative endoscopic technologies analyzing the advantages and drawbacks. The article covers both traditional tests including ultrasound test and narrowband imaging and new methods bringing endoscopy to the new level of visualization.
